Royals GM Dayton Moore talked Monday about the state of the team. We learned more about his view of where the team stands and what we can expect in the future.
Moore is high on the maturity level of Bobby Witt Jr. and Nick Pratto and he expects to be transitioning one or both of them to the major league team next season. Now that’s not to say they won’t appear with the big league club this season. They will be promoted when the organization feels they are ready. But it appears that Moore expects one or both to be in the majors next year, if not sooner.
Dayton Moore is disappointed with the team’s record. That’s good. He understands how they got to where they are but said that there are no excuses. When fans hear what they think are excuses from Dayton Moore, I think he thinks he’s explaining the situation and what has happened. He doesn’t excuse the problems the club is having.
The roster won’t change much next season, and yet Moore expects the club to contend. As I said earlier, Bobby Witt Jr. and Nick Pratto could take over half of the infield. A pleasant surprise was Moore saying that he can no longer count on Adalberto Mondesi beating healthy. He said Mondesi might be a guy who can’t play more than 100 games in a season. Even that seems optimistic right now. The plan going into next season is to build a club with planning on Mondesi, and whatever they get form Mondesi is a bonus. Having said that, it’s clear that Bobby Witt Jr. will, or should, be the starting shortstop when he is promoted. Moore said he isn’t going to release Mondesi, but the roster has to be protected from his injuries.
And not only do we expect Witt and Pratto to transition to the major leagues, but Moore indicated that the club will rely on them as well as improvements by the rest of the position players. And with the changes to the roster next season, the club will have more speed.
The roster next season won’t change dramatically. The starting rotation will have to continue to improve. The club will try to add depth to the bullpen.
Dayton Moore said a lot Monday that a lot of people have been thinking. It was refreshing to hear him say it. Now let’s see what happens.
