It’s been a while since the last email and podcast, but it’s back!
I had an extended Independence Day holiday. I hope you had a great time with family and friends. I spent a lot of time with family. My son and I assembled our new smoker and made the best brisket we have ever made on the Fourth of July.
I’m a person who normally thinks we have too many holidays. But Independence Day is one of the best along with Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving, and Memorial Day in my book. I’m probably leaving something out, but those are the best holidays that jump to mind.
But now Independence Day is past us for another year. We continue with the dog days of summer as we try to stay cool and wait for football games to start. I mean, I could preview the Week 11 Chiefs’ game against the Cowboys, but that’s silly. Who cares about that right now? And let me let you in on a little secret. The MVP of that game will be Patrick Mahomes or the Chiefs will lose. Maybe it’s not that extreme, but it’s almost that extreme. It’s not that difficult.
Last night I released a podcast in which I talked about everything below plus I played one of my favorite games, Guess Who’s Worse Than The Royals?
Ok. Enough chatter. Let’s get back into the swing of things.
Cincinnati Reds 5, Kansas City Royals 2
6:10pm – MLB – Kansas City Royals at Cleveland Indians (BSKC)
KANSAS BASKETBALL IS LOADED
Sure, football will be here before basketball, but Kansas is a basketball school first and foremost. And the Jayhawks received some exciting news recently. Ochai Agbaji, Jalen Wilson, and new transfer point guard Remy Martin are all withdrawing from the NBA Draft and will return to college for the 2021-22 season.
Remember just last season when Bill Self was working with a limited roster? Sometimes it was difficult to figure out who should be on the floor. The best point guard was Marcus Garrett, who was terrific defensively, but struggled controlling the ball and was limited on offense.
This fall is going to be drastically different. This fall, Self will be in a great position as a coach. He has so much talent on the roster that some really good players will be on the bench at all times. Heck, a player like Drake transfer Joseph Yesufu, who was terrific in the NCAA tournament, likely won’t be a starter for Kansas.
Kansas should be one of the best teams in the country this season. But in order to win a national championship they must have two things go their way. They will need to be able to beat a loaded Gonzaga team. And they will have to be eligible for the tournament.
BRADY SINGER PITCHED A GEM
I get it. It’s too early to write off these Royals starting pitcher prospects. But man they have been awful this year. I cannot imagine a worse season for these guys. Brady Singer was the first to reach the major leagues and he has been terrible.
Bu Wednesday Singer showed a glimpse of what he is capable of doing. What a terrific start for the kid. He allowed five hits and walked one in six innings. He allowed just one run and struck out six. It was his best start since April 24! Let me be even more clear. It was his only really good start since April 24. You could almost say that it was his only good start since April 24.
That’s how bad things have been for Brady Singer this year. It got to a point where I thought he deserved to be sent back to the minors just like Daniel Lynch and Jackson Kowar. And frankly, he did deserve a demotion. But the Royals didn’t do it. Why? maybe they were afraid it would hurt what appears to be a fragile psyche. Maybe they figured they just didn’t have anyone else to replace him with. I’m not sure why they didn’t send him down. But we finally got another good start out of him. Let’s see if he can carry that over into the second half of the season.
HOW GOOD IS SPORTING?
Sporting won again this past weekend. Did you watch it? It was in Los Angeles on July 4th. The LA Galaxy dominated the game early on. The game was scoreless until the 80 minute mark when Johnny Russell scored his first goal of the season. And Khiry Shelton tacked on an insurance goal in extra time to give Sporting a 2-0 win.
Sporting is now tied with Seattle with the most points in the league. Seattle has a game in hand. Based on results, Seattle would appear to be the better team. Sporting has three more goals than Seattle in one more game. But Sporting has allowed almost twice as many goals as Seattle. Now, it’s tough to say without watching both clubs, and I haven’t seen a single Seattle game this year. I would just lean towards Seattle if these two played, simply because soccer is a low-scoring game, and I would expect a good defense to slow down a good offense.
And there are a few other teams that could be better than Sporting, but those teams are in the Eastern Conference. Sporting and Seattle appear to be the class of the West.
July 25 we get to see Sporting at Seattle. That is a don’t-miss game. Let’s see if this Sporting offense can score against Seattle. If Sporting can win that game, then things are looking awfully good.
NOTES… The Royals traded 3B Kelvin Gutierrez to the Baltimore Orioles for cash. Gutierrez was designated for assignment last week.
