Football can’t come soon enough.
This is awful. It’s not just that they are losing games. That’s bad enough. But very few regulars are playing well at all.
Mike Matheny is trying to rehab a 29-year old player who is in his eighth major league season. Television announcers are telling us allowing a run an inning is a good pitching performance. It’s a mess.

ROYALS EXPECTATIONS REDUCED
With the start the Royals got off to this season, people were talking about them contending for a playoff spot. I said I didn’t see it then, and nobody sees it now. But now it seems like expectations have fallen off a cliff.
Danny Duffy pitched 3 1/3 innings Monday. He allowed five hits and four runs and threw 62 pitches. And when he came out of the game Rex Hudler said good job. Good job?! Are you kidding me?! That’s not good and it’s barely a job!
The Royals are on pace for more than 90 losses. Again! Is that ok? That kind of performance should never be acceptable.
But we have gone from hoping the Royals could stay in the race until August or September to being eliminated from any kind of meaningful game in June.
NCAA NIL APPROACH
With a July 1 deadline approaching, the NCAA is going to allow Division I athletes the ability to profit off of their name, image, and likeness based on the laws in their state. Athletes would not lose their eligibility in states where there is no NIL law.
Sporting had an impressive win over LAFC this past weekend. After falling behind 1-0, Sporting received two impressive goals from Alan Pulido and Daniel Salloi.
Sporting will next play at the L.A. Galaxy on July 4. The Galaxy is third in the Western Conference behind Seattle and Sporting. The Galaxy has a better points per game average than Sporting but has two games in hand.
ROYALS DOWN ON GUTIERREZ
The Royals called up 3B Emmanuel Rivera from Triple-A Omaha and designated 3B Kelvin Gutierrez for assignment. Gutierrez had a rough day defensively on Sunday and has not done much at the plate.
Rivera looked terrific in his major league debut. He singled on the very first pitch he saw. He singled in his second plate appearance. Garrett Richards finally got him out on a strikeout in Rivera’s third plate appearance.
JORGE SOLER BATS SECOND
The Royals decided to move Jorge Soler to the second spot in the lineup. Mike Matheny views the lineup with an old-school approach. To him the number two batter is supposed to move the lead off batter around the bases.
His first at-bat had a nice approach and ended with a single to right field. But his second at-bat was back to swinging for the fences. With two strikes he he a ground ball down the line. Had he run he might have beat the pitcher to first. But he didn’t run. Maybe he thought it was catcher’s interference, I’m not sure.
At what point does he sit on the bench? I realize the Royals are trying to get him going offensively, but that goes against their preaching of trying to compete. I realize that they aren’t trying to compete. There is no way they are trying with how they approach the game day in and day out. But they like to talk about trying to compete. So if you are trying to compete, Jorge Soler should sit the bench. He had a great year a few years back. That’s not Soler.
