Chiefs’ minicamp came to an end yesterday, and now we have the long wait until the start of training camp.
Training camp is just under six weeks away. It starts on July 27. All teams start on that date this year except for the Cowboys and Steelers, who can start on the 21st since they play in the Hall of Fame Game.
The roster can have up to 90 players at the start of training camp. Roster cuts begin on August 17 and continue until teams have to be at their 53-man roster on August 31.
Week 1 of the regular season is on September 12. The Chiefs start with a challenge right away when they host the Cleveland Browns. But if the Browns couldn’t beat the Chiefs without Patrick Mahomes for a good portion of their playoff game last season, can Cleveland win in Week 1 when Mahomes should be at his healthiest? I say no. But who cares? We can see football from here, and we can’t wait.

The final day of minicamp saw Andy Reid, Tyrann Mathieu, and Patrick Mahomes at the podium for questions from the traditional media. It’s the last time the media will talk with them before training camp. There really isn’t much to talk about at this time of year, but here is what they said.
Andy Reid is pleased with the players. They came in ready to work and had a good mindset. He said that RB Jerrick McKinnon has a good grasp of the passing game already. The passing game for the backfield will likely be increased this season. Clyde Edwards-Helaire settled in last season. The coaches didn’t give him too much and will expand on that this season.
Reid said that they were cautious with QB Patrick Mahomes. Reid feels that Mahomes left minicamp feeling pretty good.
Minicamp was mostly a passing camp. Reid wanted to take care of the guys and minimize the contact in the running game.
Reid thought Chris Jones looked good rushing the passer in shorts, but they will have to see how he does with pads on.
Reid also spoke highly of Noah Gray. He said Gray is a smart kid and a good route runner. Gray works hard and is the type of tight end quarterbacks like to throw to. That means he catches most of the balls that come his way.
Tyrann Mathieu was, of course, asked about his contract. You will remember that Mathieu tweeted earlier in the offseason that he might have to move on to another team after the season, making it sound like there were contract issues. Really though, we wouldn’t expect anything to get done until after minicamp. We are at that point now. Mathieu said Thursday that he could not see himself playing for another team.
Mathieu said that he is a better person for having played for the Chiefs because of the coaches he has been around. They coach players off the field as much as on the field. He is looking forward to continuing to be a Chief past this season. That’s good news, and it’s what I expect. An extension should get done before training camp.
Mathieu said that the defense learned some new coverages and threw in some new wrinkles on the field. They couldn’t do that last year when everything was virtual. And Mathieu said that being together in person is necessary to build team chemistry. He said that guys need to be healthy to be together in training camp, where he feels it is important to build relationships.
We heard a lot about how difficult it was to learn the defense with Bob Sutton as the defensive coordinator. Steve Spagnuolo was supposed to free the players up to react more. But Thursday, Mathieu said that their defense is complex, especially for the defensive backs.
Patrick Mahomes is who everyone wants to talk with, especially Karen Kornacki, and he was the last to take the podium. Mahomes said that he continues to rehab the toe but was able to move around well at minicamp. He will continue working on his rehab and will work out in Texas with his personal trainer between now and training camp. He has a couple of vacations planned for that time as well.
Mahomes never wants to lose another game like they lost in the Super Bowl last season. That’s not a surprise, but Mahomes is one of those players you expect to work harder than ever because of the motivation from losing that game.
Mahomes said that the offense is always adding new wrinkles. They want to throw more to the backfield and tight ends this season while still attacking with the receivers. And, as usual, he said that the offense has a lot of room for improvement if he makes better decisions.
There isn’t a lot you can take away from minicamp, but it takes the Royals off our minds for a few days.
The Chiefs are signing WR Darrius Shepherd to compete in training camp. He spent the past two seasons in Green Bay. They waived OL Martinas Rankin to make room for Shepherd.
NOTES… Royals OF Edward Olivares was optioned to Triple-A Omaha. A corresponding roster move will be announced today.
