The Royals finally broke out of their offensive slump and got the 6-1 win over the Athletics.
BIG PICTURE: The win snapped the Royals’ five-game losing streak. Their record is now 30-31. There wasn’t much to take from this game. Nicky Lopez continued his excellent defense. The Royals finally broke out of their offensive rut and finally got a good start on the mound. The timing of both of those things kicks off the weekend the right way and lets the club relax and get back to playing good baseball.
MNOR, NO, MAJOR START… Mike Minor has struggled this season, like most of the rotation, but Thursday was his day. He was terrific. Even when it appeared that the offense would not help out for most of the game, Minor continued to roll and keep the team in the game.
Minor ended up going seven innings. He allowed three hits and one walk and struck out eight. He let just one run across the plate.
The Royals needed a start like this one. After the young kids struggled in Los Angeles, Minor became a stopper and got the Royals back on the winning track.
OFFENSE TAKES ADVANTAGE OF BREAKS… While Mike Minor was rolling through the Athletics’ lineup, the offense was failing to help him. Inning after inning, there was nothing to show for their efforts. Finally, in the seventh, the Royals got a couple of breaks and capitalized on them.
Andrew Benintendi started the inning with a single to center. After Salvador Perez struck out, Jorge Soler reached on catcher’s interference thanks to a Royals challenge. Then, Hunter Dozier doubled down the third-base line to score Benintendi when Matt Chapman could not field a tough hop. When Kelvin Gutierrez snuck a single through the infield up the middle, two more runs scored, and the Royals finally had a lead on this road trip in their fourth game.
Andrew Benintendi then added a solo home run, and Jorge Soler added a two-run shot in the eighth to give the Royals a 6-1 lead. And for the first time on this road trip, the Royals’ dugout was jumping.
NEXT UP: The Royals will try to even the record back up on Friday when Brady Singer takes the mound.
