MAHOMES TALKS 20-0
Patrick Mahomes was recently asked which record he would like to break in the upcoming season. Mahomes said that he would like to go 20-0 in the first 17-game regular season.
The 1972 Miami Dolphins are the only team to go undefeated and win the Super Bowl. The Dolphins went 17-0, including three in the postseason.
The 2007 New England Patriots won their first 18 games before losing to the New York Giants in the Super Bowl.
The biggest challenges for the Chiefs will come early in the season. The Chiefs play six games against 2020 playoff teams in their first nine games. In their last eight games, the Chiefs only play one playoff team. They host the Pittsburgh Steelers at Arrowhead in Week 16.
Will the Chiefs go 20-0? No. Was Mahomes serious? I don’t know. But it’s a great goal, especially for a team like the Chiefs.
The mainstream media commented throughout last season how the Chiefs seemed to sleepwalk through games. The 20-0 goal could be used as a motivator for the team. If the team plays well, they are a lock for the division and the playoffs. The goal is a Super Bowl victory. Whatever it takes for them to motivate themselves is worth trying.
Many of the roster rules implemented last season because of the covid are expected to remain for the 2021 season. Practice squads are expected to remain at 16 players. Players were only required to sit out three weeks when put on injured reserve instead of eight. Also, instead of only three players returning from injured reserve, an unlimited number of players can return. These rules could become permanent because of an expansion of the regular season from 16 to 17 games which starts this season.
MIKE KRZYZEWSKI TO RETIRE
Duke Basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski is retiring after this season. The school named assistant coach Jon Scheyer as the head coach in waiting. He will take over the program after this upcoming season.
Krzyzewski started his time at Duke in 1980. He coached Duke last season to its worst record since the 1994-95 season. In December, with his club struggling, Krzyzewski wanted the NCAA to stop playing “because of the pandemic” when it was clear that his team would have a rough year. Duke failed to make the NCAA tournament.
NOTES: Churchill Downs suspended horse trainer Bob Baffert for two years. Baffert trained Kentucky Derby winner Medina Spirit who failed two tests for a banned steroid after winning the Derby.
