The pitching was really good once again, but this time the Tampa Bay Rays won the game 2-1.
There isn’t a lot to say about this game. The pitching dominated. Both teams advanced their runner to third in the first at-bat of the tenth inning. The Royals couldn’t knock him in, and the Rays did. It was an even game. You are disappointed with the outcome, but it’s hard to be upset when you play the Rays this tough.
BIG PICTURE: The Royals drop back to a game below .500 at 23-24 with the loss on Wednesday. The offense struggled once again, but that’s not a shock going up against Tampa Bay, especially Tyler Glasnow.
NOTES: Reports say that RHP Josh Staumont is dealing with a tired arm which could explain why he didn’t pitch on Tuesday.
MINOR IN NAME ONLY… He wasn’t efficient, but Mike Minor was effective Wednesday night. He allowed just two hits but walked four in five innings. He allowed one run and struck out nine. You would like to get more innings from your starter, but if he’s only going to be able to go five innings, at least he got through it, allowing just one run.
Minor has not been great for the Royals in 2021, but he hasn’t been awful. You could live with what Minor has done if he’s your fifth starter. You just don’t want him to be your number two starter which is how he started the season for the Royals. Soon, he will be moved down in the rotation or removed completely as the prospects are promoted.
BENINTENDI BLAST TIES IT UP… Andrew Benintendi hit a home run to left-center field to lead off the top of the ninth. The home run tied the game at 1-1. Benintendi has been hitting the ball really well in May and had hit a few balls into left-center in the first inning of the first two games in this series but was robbed both times by Rays center fielders. But he came through Wednesday to prolong the game.
WHAT’S THE PLAN FOR SOLER… Ok. What do we do with Jorge Soler? He is absolutely awful this season. It’s been long enough to make a decision. He needs to sit some and take his mind off of things and let someone who can actually make contact try to help the team.
The bigger question is, what do the Royals do with Soler this offseason? They are not re-signing him. They can’t. They got their money’s worth out of Soler. They don’t need to try to squeeze out anything else from Soler. If you give him some time off and he comes back on fire, great. If not, it’s time to move on.
NEXT UP: The Royals will try to win the series on Thursday when Brady Singer faces Shane McClanahan at 2:10 pm. Singer has allowed at least two runs in every start in May. He has allowed three, four, two, and three runs in those four starts. The chances of a third straight 2-1 game are not good. We should see a little offense on Thursday.
