We are waiting to hear who will take Jake Newberry’s spot on the roster. Could it be Adalberto Mondesi?

WILL THE CHIEFS TRADE FOR JULIO JONES?
Atlanta Falcons WR Julio Jones said that he is out of Atlanta. He wants to go somewhere he can win. There is clearly interest in Jones from Chiefs fans. With Sammy Watkins leaving for Baltimore this off-season, the Chiefs could use another top receiver. The Chiefs tried to attract a wide receiver in free agency but were unsuccessful. They negotiated with Pittsburgh WR JuJu Smith-Schuster, but he returned to the Steelers. Jones requested a trade a few months ago, and the Falcons reportedly agreed to listen to offers.
Any team that trades for Julio Jones will inherit a contract in which they owe him $15.3 million in 2021, $11.5 million in 2022, and $11.5 million in 2023. The 2021 money is fully guaranteed. Only $2 million of the 2022 money is guaranteed. No money is guaranteed in 2023. Of course, part of the cost of Julio Jones is what a team would have to trade to get him. The Falcons have been asking teams for a first-round pick in a Jones trade. Others in the league don’t believe the Falcons will get a first-round pick in a deal.
The Chiefs likely won’t be interested in acquiring Jones. The cost in draft picks to acquire Jones is exorbitant at this time. Even if the Falcons can’t get a first-round pick for Jones, the Chiefs have traded away enough picks recently that I doubt they will want to part with any more for an often injured wide receiver who doesn’t score a lot of touchdowns.
And do the Chiefs have salary cap space for Jones? I would say no, but we have seen how well Brett Veach can dance around the cap. At some point, though, the cap is real and does affect what you can do.
Julio Jones would be a lot of fun to watch in Andy Reid’s offense when healthy and everything is clicking. But how often will Jones be healthy? He has a reputation of constantly being hurt, but he has played in at least 14 games in each of the last six seasons except for last year. He seems to be questionable heading into a lot of games with one injury or another, though. I don’t see signing Jones as a wise move, and I don’t think Veach will disagree with me.
So, in a best-case scenario, with a healthy Julio Jones and plenty of cap space, and maybe five years ago, adding Jones would be a great idea. That’s not the case now.
RHP Jake Newberry was optioned to Triple-A Omaha. 3B Hunter Dozier was moved from the 7-day to the 10-day injured list. Rumors are that Adalberto Mondesi will be called up before today’s game. We shall see.
Former Sporting K Jimmy Nielsen will be inducted as a Sporting Legend before the June 23 game against the Colorado Rapids.
NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL LEAGUE
Six of the country’s largest high school basketball programs have agreed to start a new league, with two additional schools yet to be decided. The schools involved are IMG Academy (Florida), La Lumiere (Indiana), Montverde (Florida), Oak Hill (Virginia), Sunrise Christian Academy (Kansas), and Wasatch Academy (Utah). Additional schools could be added in future years. The league will consist of ten games and a postseason tournament.
NOTES: QB Aaron Rodgers did not report Monday for the start of Green Bay’s organized team activities (OTAs). Rodgers has said that he will not play for the Packers until backup QB Jordan Love is traded. Rodgers has always attended OTAs in past years… Tim Tebow jerseys became the top-selling jersey on NFL Shop within hours of him signing with Jacksonville.
