Baseball Rule Experimentation
Do you remember that Major League Baseball reached an agreement last year with the independent Atlantic League? The partnership gives the Atlantic League some support to attract players who want to be seen by MLB teams. MLB gets to experiment with rule changes.
This season, MLB moves the pitching rubber back a foot, starting in the second half of the season. The distance between the pitching rubber and home plate will be 61 feet and 6 inches. The idea is to give the batter more time to react and allow more balls to be put in play and fewer strikeouts.
The league will also implement what Jayson Stark termed the Double Hook. With the Double Hook rule, both teams start with a designated hitter, but when the starting pitcher is removed from the game, that team also loses its designated hitter.
These are legitimate experiments. The three-batter rule for pitchers was tested in the Atlantic League.

Going along with that change, the Big 12 removed its rule that requires athletes to sit out a year if they transfer within the conference… Arizona is expected to hire long-time Gonzaga assistant Tommy Lloyd to replace Sean Miller.
