Kansas didn’t show up the it’s second round game against USC. It wasn’t just that Kansas was missing open shots. They were doing that. But USC was also making everything difficult for the Jayhawks. It was a sad ending to a mediocre season for Kansas.
Kansas City Royals 9, San Diego Padres 9 (Box Score)
Kansas 85, USC 51 (Box Score)
The Royals reassigned OF Kyle Isbel, RHP Jackson Kowar, LHP Daniel Lynch, and SS Bobby Witt Jr. to minor league camp.
Dayton Moore decided not to have Bobby Witt Jr. break camp with the major league club because he would be playing second base. Moore didn’t think it was fair to Witt to ask him to play a position he worked for just two weeks. Witt will be focusing on shortstop, third base, and outfield in the minor leagues.
Mike Matheny said that Witt would be working at multiple positions in the minor leagues, so he is ready to grab a spot that becomes available. The clear options are second base and center field. If either Nicky Lopez or Michael Taylor struggles, Witt might get the call.
I tend to think that the Royals are looking at Witt playing third base. If Lopez struggles, Witt could play second base, or they might put Whit Merrifield at second and move Hunter Dozier to the outfield for Bobby Witt Jr to play third base. If Michael Taylor struggles, Whit Merrifield could move to center, Hunter Dozier to right field, and Bobby Witt Jr. to third base.
Regardless, the Royals would be better off with Bobby Witt Jr. in the lineup than Nicky Lopez. That we know today.
The NFL is planning for a more normal draft this year in Cleveland. There will be an outdoor stage where the picks will be announced. Top draft prospects will be present. Fans will be allowed. The question is how many fans Cleveland officials will allow in the area.
