It’s Friday! I love it! It’s been a long week. We are heading into the last regularly scheduled weekend of play for college basketball. Kansas was going to have the week off, but they added a non-conference game next week. Hopefully, we get all of the games this weekend that are scheduled.
Chiefs injury news… Chiefs’ RT Mitchell Schwartz underwent surgery on Wednesday. The rehab is not too long. He is looking forward to a healthy 2021 season.
Royals making the playoffs?… Royals’ second baseman Whit Merrifield said the team expects to make the playoffs this year. He hopes the team can leave camp with more than two starting pitchers, Hunter Dozier is healthy, Salvador Perez can see, and Adalberto Mondesi the way he was late last season. If those things happen, Whit said people should watch out.
Royals promotional date set… The Royals announced that May 23 will be Negro Leagues Day at Kauffman Stadium. The Royals will wear uniforms like the 1949 Kansas City Monarchs. The Detroit Tigers will wear uniforms like the 1920 Detroit Stars. While many people enjoy these unique games, I prefer the Royals wearing their uniforms. But this game is not going away.
Schedules, they are a-changin’… Missouri’s game scheduled for Saturday against Texas A&M was postponed because of covid issues with A&M.
Kansas has added a game to its schedule during the week other teams are making up previously postponed games. Kansas will host UTEP on Thursday, March 4. The game will be shown on ESPN+.
The Mahomes Effect?… Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson is the latest high-level quarterback in the news regarding a possible divorce from his current team. Wilson is reportedly not getting along with the Seahawks organization right now. His agent said Thursday that he wants to play in Seattle, but Wilson would only waive his no-trade clause to go to Dallas, Chicago, Las Vegas, or New Orleans if it came to being traded.
Is there a chance all of this is caused by the massive success Patrick Mahomes has had in Kansas City? Let me explain. Mahomes just finished his third season as a starter. He plays for a great offensive coach in Andy Reid. It has been a great relationship ever since Mahomes took the league by storm three years ago. Together they have played in three consecutive AFC Championship games and two Super Bowls.
And just now, are we hearing upper-level quarterbacks talk about wanting to leave their teams or at least open to the idea. Is it because they know that they could have more success if they were matched up with a better offensive mind with a different coach?
Or maybe they saw how Tom Brady picked a team that helped him succeed on offense and have the defense to help him win a Super Bowl.
Whatever the reason, NFL quarterbacks finally understand their worth, and they are starting to take advantage of it.
The NCAA giveth… The NCAA ruled on the South Carolina men’s basketball case, which came out of the FBI investigations. A former assistant coach violated ethical rules by accepting bribes to steer players toward specific agents. The school argued that it should not receive harsh penalties because it did not know what the assistant was doing. The NCAA agreed with the school and accepting minor penalties the school had recommended. South Carolina will have some minor penalties but did not lose any scholarships and was not banned from postseason play.
What is driving the rift between Russell Wilson and Seahawks? ‘Power and control’ (The Athletic)
