The NFL offseason is underway, and the Chiefs have some decisions to make. And Patrick Mahomes’ new contract starts affecting the salary cap in a big way in 2021.
Whereas Patrick Mahomes’ contract counted around $5.3 million against the cap in 2020, it will take up $24.8 million in 2021. In 2022, it goes up to $31.4 million and then up to $42.4 million in 2023.
But even with the large cap hit that Mahomes’ contract has this year, it’s only the second largest on the team. Frank Clark will count $25.8 million against the cap. That’s $1 million more than Mahomes. And don’t think that they can cut Clark. He would be a dead cap hit of $37.8 million.
In fact, of the top four players against the cap in 2021, only Mahomes (#2) is on offense. Frank Clark (#1), Chris Jones (#3), and Tyrann Mathieu (#4) round out the top four.
With the Chiefs over the estimated salary cap by $17 million at this time, there is a lot of work ahead for Brett Veach. One of the first orders of business is to converted Patrick Mahomes’ roster bonus to a signing bonus to spread the money over the rest of the contract. And it would seem like the team will be looking to improve the offensive line to protect that investment.
Yes, Brett Veach will be busy, but he is busy every year at this time. But it’s a good busy.

The Royals held their first full-squad workout on Monday. Bobby Witt Jr. is in camp and has been told to focus at all infield positions except first base. Witt has been working out in centerfield on his own, but the Royals are sticking with the infield for now.
Royals’ RHP Ronald Bolanos is being stretched out as a starter in Spring Training even though his chances of making the major league rotation are slim. He could earn a spot in the bullpen. It’s regular for teams to have all potential starters increase their innings during Spring Training in case they are needed.
The Royals signed RHP Brad Brach to a minor league contract with an invitation to Spring Training. Brach was with the New York Mets in 2020. Brach is a side-arm throwing pitcher, but the different release point didn’t seem to help him in 2020. He walked 14 and allowed eight hits and eight runs in just 12 1/3 innings in 2020.
RHP Ian Kennedy signed a minor league deal with the Texas Rangers after having played with the Royals for five seasons. So Kennedy moves on but not during Spring Training. The Royals and Rangers share a complex in Surprise, Arizona.
Kansas OLB coach Chider Uzo-Diribe accepted a job as the defensive line coach for SMU. Former Bowling Green assistant Jake Schoonover will take over that role as well as being the special teams coordinator.
NFL teams can begin designating franchise players starting today.
Colorado Rockies’ Ian Desmond is opting out for the second consecutive season. Desmond, 35, said that he would rather be with his family than work under the current covid conditions.
