Kansas State isn’t making a push for the NCAA tournament, but this was still a big game. The Wildcats were trying to get their first win of 2021! Is that crazy? It’s not surprising if you know the team and the conference, but it’s still somewhat surprising that they haven’t been able to win one game this year.
But one thing we have discussed for a few weeks now is how hard the team has played for Bruce Weber. They could have given up and called it a season. And now they finally won a game in 2021, and on the road nonetheless.
Neither team shot well in this game, but somebody had to win. The conference wasn’t going to let both teams lose. And even though it was close for most of the game, Kansas State took control with five minutes remaining. The Wildcats dominated the last five minutes of the game on their way to their second conference victory. Down 51-46, Kansas State ended the game on a 16-3 run to win 62-54.
This game was likely the last chance for a regular-season conference win for the Wildcats. With games against Oklahoma and West Virginia remaining on the schedule and likely not a makeup game against Iowa State, this game against TCU was their best chance to win in 2021.
And this was by no means a guarantee, but Kansas State stepped up in the last five minutes. That’s not something you see a losing team do. Losing teams fold at the end of a close game. Maybe there is something this team can build on next season.
