Welcome to today’s Dr. Feelgood!
The NFL season really got started on Sunday. Tom Brady struggled. That will make Chiefs fans happy. The Raiders and Chargers both won and Denver lost, so it’s a three-way tie at the top of the AFC West for a week. The Chiefs travel to Los Angeles to play the Chargers next weekend. The Royals get the day off today. I’m sure they would like to be playing with the way they are rolling right now.
It’s a light day in sports today so you might want to get some things done around the house so yo have time later in the week for watching some Royals games.
Royals 11, Pirates 0
Sporting KC 1, Minnesota United 0
6:00pm – NFL – ESPN – Pittsburgh Steelers at NY Giants
9:10pm – NFL – ESPN – Tennessee at Denver
Royals 11, Pirates 0
Six wins in a row! Did you think that would happen this season for the Royals? I certainly didn’t after how things started but three games against the Pirates increases the odds.
The Royals had 12 hits Sunday after getting 13 on Saturday. The offense is really on fire right now. But those 12 hits were done by just five players.
Salvador Perez, Maikel Franco and Hunter Dozier each had three hits. Perez and Dozier included a home run each. Whit Merrifield had two hits and Nicky Lopez had one.
The concerning part of the Royals offense Sunday was Adalberto Mondesi. Mondesi was 0-for-4 with three strikeouts. That’s one day after gong 2-for-5 with, you guessed it, three strikeouts. It’s concerning because it’s difficult to start hitting well but starting a dry spell is simple. Let’s hope this isn’t the end of Mondesi’s hot streak.
Have I buried the lead? Maybe but that’s ok. Brad Keller pitched a complete game. Did you think you would hear about a Royals pitcher throwing a complete game this year? Well, Keller was terrific in this one. He allowed just five hits, walked one and had just two strikeouts in 111 pitches.
Stop me if you have heard this before. Sporting out-shot their opponent by a large margin (21-6). They had more shots on goal (7-0). The difference this time is that Sporting scored late and didn’t allow a goal.
Johnny Russell made a run in the 80th minute and was fed on a long pass from Graham Zusi. Russell just had to beat the keeper which he did and finally Sporting put a shot in the back of the net.
I give Sporting a lot of trouble for their defense but this week I’m giving them all of the credit they deserve. Minnesota, tied with Sporting for second place in the Western Conference entering the game, had almost no offense against Sporting.
With the win Sporting takes back sole possession of first place in the Western Conference. They will host FC Dallas next Sunday.
