Monday was a well-deserved slow day in the sports world. The Royals had the day off. They do play on FSKC tonight though. We also learned on Monday that Kansas State has found its new defensive coordinator. We are still looking for word on the NFL CBA vote by the players. And Illinois has extended its basketball coach for three more seasons.

OFF THE TOP…
I asked people on Twitter if they thought the Chiefs should sign Chris Jones to a long-term contract or trade him. The people have spoken and they want Chris Jones to remain with the Chiefs.
@maxsch00 wants the two sides to work something out that works for both the Chiefs and Chris Jones.
@swimmierkimmie1 kept it short and sweet:
Of course, if the Chiefs can keep Chris Jones and continue to build a Super Bowl-caliber team they should. The big problem is the salary cap. The Chiefs have just $16.6 million available before any cuts and they are looking to sign Patrick Mahomes to a long-term deal. Mahomes’ market value is $36 million per season.
Now, there is a chance for a rather large increase in the salary cap in 2021. A chance. That would mean that they would keep Chris Jones on a one-year deal with the franchise tag and put the new contract off until next season when they have room under the salary cap. Can they even do that? The Chiefs would be up against the cap without even signing their draft picks yet. Jones can’t do anything about the tag but sit out if he doesn’t like it. He missed time this past offseason because of his contract. Who thinks he won’t do it this season?
And what do you do with Patrick Mahomes? He doesn’t have to get a new contract this offseason either but you would probably like to lock him up sooner rather than later. Keep the quarterback happy. He is the future of the organization.
I talked about the problem with signing Chris Jones to a long-term contract in Sunday’s podcast. Give it a listen to get more on this issue and why I feel that the best thing they can do is trade him even though we would all like to be able to keep him in Kansas City.
Kansas State promoted safeties coach Joe Klanderman to defensive coordinator taking the place of Scottie Hazelton who recently left to take the same job at Michigan State. Klanderman has been coaching with Chris Klieman for six seasons.
IN THE NEWS…
– Lawyers for the NFL and NFLPA are still discussing the CBA before it is sent to the players for voting. Initially, the ballots were to go out Monday.
– Illinois signed head basketball coach Brad Underwood to a three-year contract extension. The contract begins at $3.4 million per year and increases to $4 million. The extension runs through the 2025-26 season.
TODAY: Catch the Royals play the Diamondbacks at 7:05 pm on FSKC.
PODCAST: The Sunday night podcast was a fun one. I talked about the weekend’s college basketball games. I also talked about the problem I have with the KenPom ratings, what the Chiefs should do with Chris Jones, what the Royals should do with Whit Merrifield, Sporting’s season-opening win, and more.
