The Royals waited 29 years between World Series appearances. They waited 30 years between World Series championships. As long and as difficult as that was for Royals fans, Chiefs fans say hold my beer. It’s been 50 years since the Chiefs have appeared in a Super Bowl. They can make it 50 years between Super Bowl championships with one more win this season. That game is in two weeks in Miami. It’s the biggest game in 50 years.

AFC CHAMPIONSHIP: CHIEFS (35) vs TITANS (24)
Easy, right? No sweat, right? Not in my house. You know the history of the Chiefs in the playoffs. Not good! But this team is different. This team has Patrick Mahomes. The Chiefs have the best quarterback in the NFL and probably the best quarterback in the history of football. No, my house wasn’t calm until the Chiefs were up 35-17. Even then some were not comfortable until the game ended and they probably even thought there was still a chance the NFL would figure out a way to take it away. I think that would only happen to St. Louis if they still had a team.
When Tennessee marched down the field to start the game every Chiefs fan had to be nervous. Fortunately, they had to settle for a field goal. You had to think the Chiefs would go down the field for at least that much but instead, it was three and out. The Chiefs struggled again at the start of this game but nowhere near to what they did last week.
I talked on the podcast on Thursday about how I thought the Chiefs would win and cover the seven-point spread. I thought that if the Chiefs did not make any mistakes with special teams and if they were at least even in turnovers, there was no chance Tennessee would be able to win the game. I have to admit, I was just a little nervous with how the game started.
But this is the Chiefs’ year to win. The team deserves it. The owner deserves it. And damn it, the city deserves it.
We thought Bashaud Breeland had an interception but it was overturned after a replay review.
The game seemed to change though after the Chiefs’ second touchdown to bring them within three at 17-14. The Titans’ next possession was a three and out. The Chiefs took the ball down the field and scored on a 27-yard touchdown run by Patrick Mahomes in which the Titans couldn’t bring him down inside the five-yard line.
If that wasn’t your turning point, maybe it was on the Titans’ first possession of the third quarter. The Titans started at their own 21 after forcing the Chiefs to punt at the start of the third quarter. After getting a first down at their own 32, the Chiefs had a penalty on first down for too many men on the field. That gave Tennessee first down and five at their 37. Derrick Henry gained four yards on first down. On second and one Henry was stopped for no gain. On third down, Henry was stopped for no gain and the Titans were flagged for holding. The Titans would end up punting. They had first and five and the Chiefs made them punt.
The Chiefs scored another touchdown on their next possession and the game was essentially over at 28-17. The Titans just didn’t have the offense to catch up. And then the Chiefs scored again. 35-17.
So how did the Chiefs do it? Well, it was a combination of things but mostly it was Patrick Mahomes. He threw for 294 yards and three touchdowns. He didn’t have a single turnover. Mahomes ran for 53 yards. He showed everyone why Chiefs fans say he is the best quarterback in the NFL.
Tyreek Hill had two receiving touchdowns.
Sammy Watkins had 114 yards receiving and a touchdown.
Tyrann Matthieu was outstanding. He led the team with nine tackles. Matthieu sees the play develop and is where he needs to be when he needs to be there for big stops.
Daniel Sorensen was terrific again in this game. He made some big stops for the defense and he hits hard.
Chris Jones played and he made a difference. He blew up the middle of the Titans offensive line.
Tanoh Kpassagnon had two sacks. Frank Clark had four tackles and a sack.
It was a beautiful sight for Chiefs fans. Finally a trip to the Super Bowl. And it really doesn’t matter who they play. If the Chiefs defense struggles they can lose to either Green Bay or San Francisco. If the Chiefs offense is on they will beat either team. It’s nice to know that the Chiefs control their own destiny. They don’t need help from their opponent. It’s up to the Chiefs. It’s great to be in the Super Bowl but most teams don’t get there often. Win it.
