The Monday after the final day of the NFL regular season is referred to as Black Monday since a lot of head coaches are fired. We have known about many of the openings prior to Black Monday this year but there were some new firings on Monday and we haven’t even received official word yet about Jason Garrett’s future with the Dallas Cowboys.

MIZZOU WINS 91-33:
Missouri defeated Chicago State 91-33 Monday to improve its record to 8-4. That’s the good news. The bad news is that Chicago State is #351 out of 353 teams in Division I basketball according to KenPom.com. In other words, Missouri beat a really bad team.
So most of what we saw in this game is meaningless but some good can come out of it. Sometimes wins over terrible teams can be a good thing for a team. Missouri had a chance to see themselves do things well on both ends of the court. They have played good defense in other games but in this one, they shot the ball really well. Yes, a lot of that has to do with Chicago State’s poor defense. But the Tigers had to make the shots.
Torrence Watson shot the ball extremely well. He was 8-for-13 behind the arc and finished with 24 points. Others shot well but nobody was close to Watson.
This game has to show Missouri that when they take good shots they can score a lot of points. Unfortunately, we haven’t seen good shooting out of the Tigers much at all this season.
This win comes just five days before they have to travel to Kentucky for their first conference game. To give you some perspective of the change the Tigers are about to face, Kentucky is #14 in KenPom and they just beat #4 Louisville on Saturday 78-70.
We know the Missouri defense has been good this season but this game is domination at another level. Chicago State shot just 24% from the field and 12% from behind the arc. To give some perspective on this, Stanford couldn’t do anything offensively against Kansas on Sunday and yet they shot 43% from the field and 30% from behind the arc. That shows us just how much Missouri dominated Chicago State.
So, no, this game means nothing in the grand scheme of things. And you don’t want to have games like this very often. But for a team that has had some bad losses already this season, a dominating win right before conference play begins might just be the confidence builder they need.
IN THE NEWS:
Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy will have opportunities to interview for head coaching jobs this year as he did last year. The Carolina Panthers and New York Giants have submitted requests to interview him for their head coach opening. He is expected to interview this week.
Baylor head football coach Matt Rhule talked with his team about opportunities to interview with NFL clubs. He said that he would be stupid to decline those opportunities. We have heard that the New York Giants and Carolina Panthers are both interested in talking with Rhule. The Dallas Cowboys will likely have an interest in Rhule as well.
The Washington Redskins fired Bruce Allen after ten years as the club’s president. He is no longer with the organization in any capacity.
The New York Giants fired head coach Pat Shurmur and are reportedly interested in Baylor’s Matt Rhule.
WHAT I’M WATCHING: I will watch the Kansas State game and likely some of the Texas game before my daughter has me change the TV to one of the New Year’s Eve shows. I’m good with that though. I love spending time with the family.
