News just kept coming in on Thursday. Some of it good and some bad or at least disappointing. I’ll let you decide which is which. It might be different for each of us. The Royals finally got the third baseman they have been looking for and now have to figure out how the other pieces fit.
Here is your daily Dr. Feelgood…
We heard from the Chiefs coordinators Thursday regarding the state of things going into the game with Chicago. Defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo said that Terrell Suggs is more than a situational pass rusher. Eric Bienemy said that he would like to have one main running back.
The Royals agreed with 3B Maikel Franco on a one-year, $2.95 million contract. Franco can make another $1.05 million in incentives. Franco reportedly chose Kansas City for the chance to play third base every day. The Royals plan might be to flip Franco at the trade deadline if he is having a good season. Hunter Dozier will apparently move to right field and Whit Merrifield will move to center field. That means that neither Bubba Starling nor Brett Philips is going to be a regular for the Royals in 2020 if Alex Gordon returns.
We learned more about the Missouri football coaching staff on Thursday. Missouri hired TCU co-offensive coordinator Curtis Luper but we aren’t sure what his role will be. Defensive assistant David Gibbs will stay with the team. Gibbs coached cornerbacks this season and will be a defensive assistant in 2020.
Clint Bowen is leaving Kansas to accept a position as the defensive coordinator for North Texas. Bowen played at Kansas and has been a coach for 21 years at the school. He was most recently the safeties coach under Les Miles after serving as the defensive coordinator for David Beatty.
James Wiseman announced that he is leaving Memphis to hire an agent and focus on the 2020 NBA Draft. Wiseman was suspended by the NCAA for 12 games after having played just three in his freshman season. The suspension was because Anfernee Hardaway supposedly paid Wiseman’s mother $11,500 in moving expenses before he was the Memphis coach but was considered a booster by the NCAA.
There were some baseball transactions on Thursday:
- The Los Angels Angels agreed with RHP Julio Tehran on a one-year, $9 million contract.
- The Chicago White Sox signed former Royal Cheslor Cuthbert to a minor-league contract with an invitation to Spring Training.
- The Milwaukee Brewers agreed with 1B Justin Smoak on a one-year, $4 million contract. There is a $5.5 million club option for 2021 with a $1 million buyout.
