Things were pretty slow in the sports world on Tuesday. We are all waiting for the weekend to see what happens in the NFL. Can the Chiefs catch a break with a Buffalo win at New England? I’m also looking forward to the college bowl games, unlike most, and a nice stretch of time with the family. But the sports world wasn’t silent on Tuesday and the Wednesday Motley Crew awaits so let’s get to it…
The AFC playoff scenarios for this week include several clinching opportunities. The Chiefs can’t clinch anything but in order to have a shot at a bye they really need to win and have Buffalo win at New England. That would move the Chiefs into the #2 seed but not clinch it. The Chiefs would still need to win their last game to secure the seed. Since ties are rare I leave those out to simply things:
- Clinches home-field advantage with a win or a New England loss
- Clinches a bye with a win or losses by either Kansas City or New England
- New England
- Clinches AFC East with a win
- Clinches a bye with a win and a Kansas City loss
- Clinches AFC South with a win or a Tennessee loss
- Clinches a playoff berth with a Pittsburgh loss
The NFL Pro Bowl rosters were announced Tuesday but it’s meaningless so we won’t waste time on it here. If you are interested you can find the roster here.
The Royals agreed to terms with RHP Braden Shipley on a minor league contract. He will make $600,000 if he makes the major league roster.
The Royals signed Humberto Arteaga and Erick Mejia to minor league contracts. Both were recently released to open spots on the 40-man roster before the Rule 5 Draft at the Winter Meetings. Both will make $585,000 if they make the major league roster.
MLS awarded a new franchise to Charlotte, North Carolina. The franchise is the league’s 30th club and will start play in 2021. David Tepper, the owner of the Carolina Panthers, led the winning bid.
MLS is expanding quite a bit in the coming years. Miami and Nashville will begin play next season in 2020. Austin and Charlotte will start in 2021 followed by St. Louis and Sacramento in 2022.
Former Iowa football coach Hayden Fry passed away Tuesday at the age of 90. Fry won 143 games in 20 seasons with the Hawkeyes. His Iowa teams won the Big Ten in 1981, 1985 and 1990. Fry was a three-time Big Ten coach of the year and won the Sporting News College Football Coach of the Year award in 1981. His family released a statement thanking people for their love and support.
The Los Angeles Angels are in the process of planning development around Angels Stadium. The stadium and surrounding parking lots cover 150 acres which is 50 more than Disneyland. The development around the ballpark is expected to include apartments, condominiums, a hotel, restaurants, and a grocery store among other things. Basically, the Angels are looking at building a town around Angels Stadium.
I have seen some suggest that this could be something the Royals and Chiefs could look into doing around Kauffman and Arrowhead. I don’t see that happening in Kansas City. I still expect the next stadium for the Royals to be downtown, probably on the land near the office of the Dunn Construction Company, part owners of the team.
ON A SIDE NOTE: Have you seen any of the trailers for the final Star Wars movies? I don’t go to the movies very often but this is one I want to see in the theater. Star Wars was a huge part of my childhood so I can’t get enough of it. But tell me this. How can this be the last one? I understand there are supposed to be other movies off of this but I don’t understand how the main story just ends. Disney paid a lot of money for the franchise. What am I missing?
WHAT I’M WATCHING: North Carolina recently fell out of the Top 25 but I will be watching them play at #2 Gonzaga. North Carolina is currently #37 in KenPom and Gonzaga is #6. This game is on ESPN2 at 8:00pm.
