The Royals selected RHP Stephen Woods Jr from the Tampa Bay Rays in the Rule 5 Draft Thursday. Woods had a 1.88 ERA in advanced A ball in 2019. The Royals did not lose anyone in the draft.
Commissioner Rob Manfred talked about the need to improve minor league facilities. He said that Major League Baseball subsidizes Minor League Baseball hundreds of millions of dollars every year. Manfred said that minor league players deserve to play in facilities that are up to grade, reasonable travel limitations and to be paid fairly. He is not happy that that MiLB acknowledges that some facilities are substandard and possibly not fixable but is unwilling to do anything about it.
The New York Mets agreed with RHP Rick Porcello on a 1-year, $10 million contract.
The New York Yankees have agreed with OF Brett Gardner on a 1-year, $10 million contract with a second-year club option of $10 million with a $2.5 million buyout.
The Detroit Tigers agreed with Austin Romine on a 1-year, $4.15 million contract.
PAC-12 commissioner Larry Scott said that discussions have started to expand the College Football Playoff to eight teams but said that it is unlikely to happen prior to the current television deal expiring in 2025-2026. Scott would like to see a requirement that all Power 5 schools play a minimum of ten games against Power 5 schools.
