Manager Mike Matheny held a press conference at the Winter Meetings on Tuesday. He said that SS Adalberto Mondesi is on track to be ready for Opening Day. He is high on 1B Ryan O’Hearn and thinks that he hit into some bad luck last year. Matheny said that C Salvador Perez could get a considerable amount of time at first base because of his Tommy John surgery. Matheny said that Hunter Dozier will likely play multiple positions. He also said that the Royals use analytics much more than most people think but that they don’t walk around waving a banner telling everyone.
The San Diego Padres are reportedly interested in trading for 2B Whit Merrifield. The Padres traded away 2B Luis Urias to the Milwaukee Brewers a couple of weeks ago. GM Dayton Moore has said that it would take a lot for a team to pry Merrifield away from the Royals. The Padres are a club with a lot of minor league talent to trade so it could be a match.
The Chiefs signed CB Chris Lammons to the practice squad and released DE Cameron Malveaux.
The Missouri Board of Curators unanimously approved Eli Drinkwitz as the next head coach of Missouri football. Drinkwitz was introduced in a press conference on Tuesday morning. He said that the Tigers offense will be a no-huddle offense that is very quarterback dependent.
Sporting Kansas City acquired top-scoring striker Alan Pulido from CD Guadalajara for a club-record transfer fee of $9.5 million. That fee is $5.5 million more than the club has paid in all transfer fees combined in its history. Pulido is 28 years old. He signed a four-year MLS contract through 2023. He will occupy an international spot on Sporting’s roster.
The NFL informed clubs today that the projected 2020 salary cap is $196.8 million – $201.2 million.
RHP Gerrit Cole agreed to terms with the New York Yankees on a nine-year, $324 million contract.
The Major League Baseball draft will move from the MLB Network studios in New Jersey to Omaha, Nebraska, the site of the College World Series. The draft will be held in the days leading up to the College World Series.

The San Francisco Giants traded cash and a player to be named later to the Los Angels Angels for Zack Cozart and Will Wilson. The deal adds $12 million to the San Francisco payroll, but the Giants are making the trade to acquire the #15 overall pick in Wilson.
