The Chiefs discovered on Sunday that they didn’t have all of their equipment. The equipment was found and arrived at the stadium shortly before game time and now we are wondering if they should do that every week.
The Chiefs gave the Patriots two first downs on their first possession with pass interference penalties although one of them called on Bashaud Breeland was very questionable. New England eventually scored on a flea-flicker. It took less than 2 1/2 minutes for the Chiefs to fall behind 7-0. After that, the half belonged completely to the Chiefs.
Leading 20-7 at the half, the Chiefs got the ball at the start of the second half. They drove the ball for over seven minutes and ended with a Harrison Butker field goal. That put Kansas City up 23-7 and in control of the game but then things turned.
The Patriots took control of the game once they fell down by 16. A blocked punt led to a New England short field and a touchdown a few plays later. A Travis Kelce fumble gave New England another possession instead of possible points for the Chiefs.
The Patriots cut the Chiefs lead to 23-16 but Bashaud Breeland came up with a big stop knocking down a fourth-down pass in the end zone on New England’s last possession to preserve the win for the Chiefs.
With the Chiefs win and the Raiders’ loss on Sunday, the Chiefs clinched the AFC West. With the Houston loss to Denver, the Chiefs took over the #3 seed. If the Chiefs can make up one more game on the Patriots, the Chiefs will get the #2 seed and a bye.
Patrick Mahomes couldn’t make his normal throws but he found a way to get the ball where his receivers could make a play. Mahomes hurt his throwing hand and it seemed to affect his throwing. Add that to his leg injury that still seems to be bothering him and probably will the rest of the season. He needs to find a way to make plays if he wants to be one of the top quarterbacks in the league and so far he is doing that.
Tanoh Kpassagnon blocked field goal for the second week in a row. After that block, everything turned around and started to go the Chiefs way. until they built a 23-7 lead.
Bashaud Breeland made a nice read and broke on a Tom Brady pass to get an interception early in the second quarter. He made a big hit on New England’s last possession of the first half that stopped the Patriots from getting a first down and ended the half. Breeland then knocked down a Brady pass in the end zone on the last offensive play of the game for New England and preserved a win for the Chiefs.
Frank Clark had a big sack of Tom Brady on New England’s first possession of the game. Clark was sick this week and was limited in practice but he was effective in his opportunities in this game. Clark didn’t play every down. He started off coming in on third-down situations.
Chris Jones put pressure on Tom Brady multiple times in this game. He got a big third-down sack on New England’s first possession of the second half to force a punt. Jones ended with three tackles, one sack, and a quarterback hit. He also had plenty to say to Tom Brady.
Tyrann Matthieu started the game covering Julian Edelman, the only receiving threat the Patriots have. He ended with six tackles including one for a loss.
K Harrison Butker is on fire. He was perfect kicking in this game. Butker was 3-for-3 on field goals and 2-for-2 on extra points.
The Chiefs host the Denver Broncos next Sunday.
