When Jeremiah Tilmon decides to play hard Missouri can be a decent team. He did that for a handful of minutes early in the second half and Missouri cut a 12 point halftime deficit to one point with ten minutes left in the game. Tilmon then took the rest of the game off and Oklahoma defeated Missouri 77-66.
Brady Manek started off hot for Oklahoma hitting there three-point shots inside of the first four minutes. Missouri failed to get out on Manek giving him open shots from three that he knocked down. Manek scored 17 points for the Sooners. The Tigers did a better job on Manek in the second half.
The Tigers also had trouble containing former Wichita State guard Austin Reaves. Reaves shot just 5-for-12 from the field and 2-for-5 from behind the arc but was 7-for-8 from the free throw line and ended up with 19 points. He also grabbed ten rebounds. Wichita State has to be upset they lost him.
After falling behind 15-3, Missouri bounced back and played even with the Sooners the rest of the first half. The Tigers are going to have to start games better and find a way to motivate Jeremiah Tilmon for an entire game to have success this season. The three-point shooting defense wasn’t good in this game giving the Sooners too many open looks from behind the arc.
This game turned multiple times. The back-breaker for Missouri came with ten minutes left in the game. Missouri cut a 12 point halftime deficit to one halfway through the second half, but then the Tigers started committing fouls and missing shots as Oklahoma turned up the defense. The Sooners stretched the lead back out to double-digits before ending with an 11 point win.
F Jeremiah Tilmon had his first good game of the season against quality competition. Unfortunately most of it came in a stretch of less than ten minutes to start the second half. Tilmon ended with 13 points on 5-for-8 shooting but just five rebounds. Tilmon still needs to play hard for the entire time he is on the court instead of small stretches but this game was a big improvement over what we have seen recently.
G Mark Smith scored 18 points on 6-for-11 shooting including 4-for-8 from behind the arc. Smith had eight rebounds.
G Dru Smith didn’t have his best scoring game but he did put in nine points. More impressive than that were the seven assists he dished out.
G Torrance Watson came off the bench and was lights out early from behind the arc. He ended up hitting 3-for-5 from behind arc on 3-for-6 shooting overall and did put up 11 points in 32 minutes.
Room for Improvement
F Kobe Brown was tough to find in this game. He look just four shots and made only one of them. He missed all three from behind the arc and they didn’t look good. Brown also had just one rebound. He ended up getting just 12 minutes in this game.
G Javon Pickett scored just five points in 31 minutes on 2-for-7 shooting and 0-for-2 from behind the arc. Picket weans very aggressive against the Sooners. He had three rebounds and two assists.
Missouri is off until next Tuesday the they will host Charleston Southern.
