The first half was all about defense for both teams. Both defensive lines got pressure on the opposing quarterback. Missouri sacked Kyle Trask four times.
Unfortunately for Missouri, Florida’s passing game found more success in the second half. The Gators started the second half with a touchdown drive. On their next drive, Missouri’s LB Nick Bolton had an opportunity for a pick-6 but couldn’t hold on for the catch. Missouri couldn’t afford to let that opportunity slip away but that’s how things went in this game. Florida scored two touchdowns in the second half as Florida outscored Missouri 17-3 that half.
The loss dropped Missouri to 2-4 in the SEC and 5-5 on the season, a season that many thought would be very positive but has been anything but that. Kelly Bryant has not been the answer at quarterback that Tiger fans had hoped. Bryant isn’t a drop-back quarterback. Barry Odom sold Bryant on coming to Missouri to be a pocket passer in hopes of helping him get drafted in the NFL. It’s clear that Kelly Bryant is not that kind of quarterback. Missouri still needs one more win to be bowl eligible.
The game changed at halftime. Florida came out in the second half and found success with the passing game which they struggled with in the first half. The pressure Missouri got on Trask in the first half was nonexistent in the second half.
The Missouri defensive front seven was terrific in the first half. They put pressure on Florida QB Kyle Trask. The shut down the few rushing attempts the Gators had and didn’t allow many yards after reception.
DL Kobie Whiteside had four tackles and two sacks.
LB Nick Bolton tied for the team lead with six tackles.
DB Jarvis Ware tied Nick Bolton with six tackles.
Room for Improvement
DB Jarvis Ware is also on this list as he had trouble picking up the ball on multiple passes by Florida allowing the Gators to move the ball in the passing game.
QB Kelly Bryant is not a pure passing quarterback. He needs to run to have success. He gained just 19 yards on 15 carries. That’s a bad sign for the Tigers and this game was no different. Bryant threw for just 204 yards on 25-for-39 passing.
RB Larry Rountree Gaines just 30 yards on seven carries. In his defense, the offensive line wasn’t giving him large holes to run through but Rountree’s day was like the team as a whole: disappointing.
Missouri hosts Tennessee next Saturday. Tennessee is 5-5 on the season like Missouri but the Volunteers are 3-3 in the SEC.
