The Chiefs signed RB LeSean McCoy after he was released by the Buffalo Bills. McCoy received a one-year, $4 million contract with $3 million guaranteed.
The Chiefs traded RB Carlos Hyde to the Houston Texans for G Martinas Rankin.
De’Anthony Thomas was suspended without pay for the first game for violating the NFL’s policy on substances of abuse. Thomas was arrested for marijuana possession in the off-season.
Gehrig Dieter and Breeland Speaks were placed on injured reserve. That means they are out for the season.
The Houston Texans traded Jadeveon Clowney to the Seattle Seahawks.
Kansas defeats Indiana State 24-17
Kansas jumped on top 7-0 on a pick-6 by Hasan Defense on Indiana State’s first possession of the game. After leading 16-3, Indiana State scored the next 14 points to take a 17-16 lead with under four minutes left in the game. A long drive by the Jayhawks ended with a 22-yard touchdown pass from Carter Stanley to Daylon Charlot. A two-point conversion gave the Jayhawks a 24-17 lead. That’s how it would finish. Kansas State dominates Nicholls 49-14
Kansas State tried to avoid losing to Nicholls like Kansas did to start their season in 2018. A loss was never even close for the Wildcats as they went up 28-0 at the half on their way to a 49-14 stomping of Nicholls. The Wildcats looked like they were in mid-season form. Kansas State looked like a team with a coach they have had for years rather than their first game together. Quarterback Skylar Thompson was terrific and this year there is no question that it is his job for the season. Read more about the Kansas State win here.
Missouri upset at Wyoming 37-31
Missouri cruised through the first quarter as they dominated Wyoming and led 14-0. The second quarter was a completely different story. A fumble by transfer quarterback Kelly Bryant was returned for a touchdown by Wyoming and the game was never the same. Wyoming led at the half 27-17. Wyoming trenched its lead to 34-17 after three quarters. Missouri made a charge in the fourth quarter with 14 points by Wyoming held on for a 37-31 upset. Read more about the Missouri loss here.
New Mexico head coach Bob Davie was taken to the hospital with “what appeared to be a serious medical incident” according to the school. Some reports said that he had a heart issue.
Liberty head coach Hugh Freeze coached his team from a hospital bed inside the press box in their home game against Syracuse. Syracuse won the game 24-0.
Sporting wins a huge game over Houston 1-0
Sporting Kansas City was more aggressive in this game than we have seen them in quite some time and it paid off in a 1-0 win against the Houston Dynamo at Children’s Mercy Park on Saturday. Although Sporting dominated the first half, Houston came out after halftime much more aggressive but couldn’t put the ball in the goal. Sporting is getting healthy and with each win seem to have more and more energy. The win Saturday was the third consecutive win for the club.
Johnny Russell put a header into the back of the net in the 12th minute to put Sporting Kansas City up 1-0 early.
The win puts Kansas City just five points out of the final playoff spot currently held by Minnesota.
Sporting has to go on the road for their next to games at Portland and L.A. Galaxy. Both clubs are also close to the cut line so these games are huge. Sporting has struggled on the road this season but will need to find a way to continue winning or at least getting points in both of these games.
Royals defeat Orioles 7-5 to tie series at 1-1
Jorge Lopez got the start Saturday night and struggled yet again in a starting role. He allowed four runs on four hits and two walks in just 4 2/3 innings. The bullpen allowed just one run over 4 1/3 innings allowing the Royals offense to battle back for a 7-5 win over the Baltimore Orioles on Saturday.
Bubba Starling hit his third major league home run in the second inning. It was his first home run in Kauffman Stadium. It was a solo home run inside the left field foul pole to give the Royals a 1-0 lead.
Hunter Dozier hit a solo home run in the seventh to tie the game at 5-5.
The final game of the series is Sunday at 1:15pm. Danny Duffy pitches for the Royals. Aaron Brooks will start on the mound for the Baltimore Orioles.
The Royals acquired 1B Ryan McBroom from the New York Yankees for cash or a player to be named later. McBroom has a .972 OPS at Triple-A. McBroom will reportedly report to the major league club so the Royals can get a good look at him before the end of the season. McBroom is eligible for the Rule 5 Draft this winter.
The Minnesota Twins broke the single season home run record with their 268th team home run.
