Royals pitching gets crushed by Athletics
Nothing went right for Royals pitchers on Monday. The Oakland Athletics jumped on top early and continued to pile on the runs. Five in the second, five in the third, one in the fourth and three in the fifth for a 14-2 lead. At that point there was nothing more to be gained from this game.
Brett Phillips hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the third to pull the Royals to within 5-2.
Mike Montgomery starts for the Royals in the second game of the series on Tuesday. Mike Fiers starts on the mound for the Oakland Athletics.
Ned Yost said that Adalberto Mondesi will be activated Sunday along with the September callups. Ned said they don’t want Mondesi diving for balls on defense or diving into based on offense the rest of the season.
The Royals will briefly go to a six man rotation when Danny Duffy returns on Saturday. Brad Keller will pitch just 15 more innings and then the club will be back to a five man rotation.
LB Breeland Speaks and QB Chad Henne will each have surgery Tuesday. Speaks has an MCL sprain and is expected to be out at least three months. Henne has a fractured ankle.
The Chiefs signed former Miami Dolphins QB Matt Moore to serve as Patrick Mahomes’ backup because of the injury to Chad Henne.
Les Miles said Monday that he will not name a starting quarterback prior to Saturday’s game. He said that the coaches are considering playing both Thomas McVittie and Carter Stanley.
