Royals drop series finale in Baltimore 8-1
Tied at one game each, the Kansas City Royals and Baltimore Orioles played the last game of a three game series on Wednesday in Baltimore. The Royals took game one but dropped game two. Wednesday’s finale was all Baltimore as they jumped on top early and crushed the Royals 8-1 to win the series.
Mike Montgomery started on the mound for the Royals. Montgomery allowed five runs on eight hits and three walks in five innings. He failed again to put two quality starts back-to-back.
Tim Hill had not allowed a run in his previous six outings but tonight he gave up three runs in an inning of work. Cal Eldred made a mound visit when Hill was out there and seemed to be quite intense with the lefty.
The offense had seven hits but just one for extra bases. That extra base hit was a home run by Whit Merrifield.
The Orioles put up three runs in the second inning on Mike Montgomery to take a 3-0 lead.
Whit Merrifield got the Royals on the scoreboard with a solo home run in the third inning to cut the deficit to 3-1.
After the home run the Orioles added on two runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth to blow the game open.
The Royals travel to Boston Thursday to finish a suspended game from earlier in the season.
