Royals take game one against Mets 4-1
The Royals won game one of a three-game series against the New York Mets 4-1. Mike Montgomery was great, allowing one unearned run on five hits and two walks in six innings. This was Montgomery’s second consecutive impressive start. In his last two starts Mike Montgomery has allowed one unearned run in 13 innings while allowing just nine hits and two walks to go with 15 strikeouts.
The bullpen didn’t allow a run, going three innings and allowing just three hits and a walk. Jake Newberry pitched the seventh. Scott Barlow and Tim Hill shared the eighth. Ian Kennedy got the save with a scoreless ninth.
The offense had eight hits in this game with half of those going for extra bases. After falling behind 1-0 in the third, the Royals put up two runs in the fifth to take a 2-1 lead. The Royals added on two more runs in the eighth to give Kennedy some breathing room for his 21st save of the season.
Jorge Soler continues to be one of the best hitters in baseball recently. He had a double and three walks in this game. He is doing an outstanding job of remaining patient at the plate when the opposing team refuses to throw him strikes.
The bottom four in the lineup all had hits. Bubba Starling had a huge single up the middle off of Edwin Diaz in the eighth inning. Starling has struggled mightily lately and even earlier in this game, but he wasn’t too down on himself to waste his plate appearance in the eighth. Diaz has struggled since doing the Mets in the offseason but he was throwing hard nonetheless and Bubba hit the ball right back up the middle to score a run.
Ryan O’Hearn and everyone else thought he had a grand slam in the eighth inning to give the Royals an 8-1 lead. But after further review the ball was ruled foul.
Hunter Dozier was 2-for-4 with a double. He hasn’t let up all season and continues to be an extremely important part of the lineup.
The Royals are still looking for someone to hit behind Jorge Soler to force the pitcher to give him something to hit. Brett Phillips, recalled Friday from Triple-A Omaha, was in that spot tonight. Phillips went 0-for-3 with a walk and a strikeout.
Game two of the season is Saturday at 6:15pm at Kauffman Stadium. Jakob Junis is pitching against Jacob deGrom.
