Royals fall to Blue Jays 9-2
Mike Montgomery was roughed up once again in this start, and although the offense was able to get base runners, they couldn’t get much across the plate and fell to the Toronto Blue Jays 9-2.
Mike Montgomery threw 78 pitches over 4.1 innings. He allowed four runs on seven hits and a walk to go with four strikeouts. Of the seven outs he recorded in play, six of those outs were on the ground so that’s a good sign. However, he doesn’t appear to have the stuff right now to put batters away very often even when he gets ahead in the count 0-2 or 1-2.
On a positive note, Kyle Zimmer pitched the sixth and seventh innings and didn’t allow a run. He walked two batters and didn’t strikeout anyone but he also didn’t allow a hit. Zimmer has pitched well since being recalled. He still needs to improve his control, but for the season Zimmer has allowed an earned run in just one of his five appearances.
Josh Staumont had a game he would like to forget. He allowed five runs, none earned, on three hits and two walks in an inning. Although none of the runs were earned they all count and Staumont was visibly feeling the pressure on the mound. We had heard about his problems with control and had seen a little of that in his prior appearances but nothing like tonight. Batters were laying off of his breaking ball which meant he had to throw strikes with his fastball. He struggled doing that and when he did throw a fastball strike the Blue Jays hit is hard. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit a grand slam immediately after an error on Humberto Arteaga would have got the Royals out of the inning without allowing a run. In Arteaga’s defense, the exit velocity on the ball he tried to field was 110mph but was still a play that should have been made.
The offense spread out hits throughout the lineup with eight of the nine starters getting at least one but failed to put many runs on the scoreboard. Hunter Dozier, Jorge Soler and Nicky Lopez each had two hits. The Royals out-hit the Blue Jays 11-10 but only put up two runs compared to Toronto’s nine. Just three of the Royals’ 11 hits were extra base hits. All three extra base hits were doubles.
Jakob Junis starts the final game of the series on the mound for the Royals in a 12:15pm game on Wednesday.
Indians trade Bauer to Reds in three team trade
The Cleveland Indians traded pitcher Trevor Bauer to the Cincinnati Reds in a three team trade that also included the San Diego Padres. The Indians received OF Yasiel Puig, OF Franmil Reyes, LHP Logan Allen, 3B Victor Nova and LHP Scott Moss. The Cincinnati Reds received RHP Trevor Bauer. The San Diego Padres received OF Taylor Trammell.
Although the players in the trade had been agreed upon, the Reds left Yasiel Puig in their game for some reason. Puig was ejected for participating in a benches-clearing brawl so he will possibility start his time with the Cleveland Indians serving a suspension.
