Friday was the day that veterans had to report to Chiefs training camp. Anthony Sherman showed up in a racing suit with the sleeves cut off and driving Clint Bowyer’s NASCAR car. Punter Dustin Colquitt and place kicker Harrison Butker arrived in a military vehicle.
Defensive lineman Chris Jones reported to camp on time. Reports are that the Chiefs will resume talking with his agents on a new contract. Jeff Chadiha reported that the Chiefs and Jones’ side are far apart on contract terms.
Sporting Kansas City loses again, this time 3-1 in New York
Sporting Kansas City played at New York City FC Friday night in Yankee Stadium. Because of the setup of Yankee Stadium, the field is five yards narrower and ten yards shorter than a standard field.
Nothing changed in this game for Sporting. The team continued to fail to score at point blank range most of the time. The defense looked lost at times.
Roger Espinoza received a red card in the second half when he spiked an opponent’s knee with a high leg. Initially given a yellow card, which would have meant his ejection anyway due to an earlier yellow card, the official changed the second yellow to a red card. Sporting had to play the remainder of the game with just ten players to NYCFC’s 11.
Sporting was able to finally put the ball in the net on a header by Ilie Sanchez. That goal cut the deficit to 2-1. But Sporting quickly allowed a third goal to fall down 3-1. That’s how it ended.
There is no reason to believe that Sporting has a string of wins in them to get into the playoffs. FiveThirtyEight.com has predictions for each MLS team with their chance of making the playoffs. They currently have Sporting with just a 22% chance of making the playoffs after losing this game.
Royals lose 8-3 as Bubba Starling shines
The Royals lost to the Cleveland Indians 8-3 on Friday but this game was all about Bubba Starling for Royals fans. Starling dominated the game defensively and had another nice offensive game. He made two excellent catches in the outfield and threw out Francisco Lindor trying to score on a sacrifice fly. At the plate he was 2-for-4 with a run scored, raising his batting average to .326 and his OPS to .812.
Jakob Junis had a bad game in this one. Just having returned from the berth of his third child, Junis allowed six runs on ten hits and two walks in six innings. It wasn’t his night. Junis has been much better in his last several starts. It makes you think that he possibly didn’t get his normal routine in which is understandable with more important matters to attend to between starts. Let’s hope he gets back on track for his next start. Congrats to Jakob Junis and his family for the new addition!
Jorge Lopez pitches like a guy who is afraid to throw strikes to major league hitters. In this game he allowed two runs on three hits and three walks in three innings pitched. Lopez threw more strikes after a visit by pitching coach Cal Eldred that looked like Eldred was giving Lopez a stern talking to which was deserved. Lopez has a lot of talent but if he doesn’t trust it he will never succeed.
The Royals recalled Richard Lovelady from Triple-A Omaha on Friday and activated Jakob Junis from the paternity list. They optioned Jake Newberry to Omaha and designated Brian Flynn for assignment.
