Royals trade Martin Maldonado to the Chicago Cubs
Martin Maldonado hit a double in Monday’s game and was later removed from the game. After the game Ken Rosenthal reported that Maldonado had been traded to the Chicago Cubs. The Royals received LHP Mike Montgomery in the trade. The Royals had Montgomery in their minor league system until they included him in the trade with the Tampa Bay Rays along with Jake Odorizzi and Wil Myers for James Shields and Wade Davis.
Montgomery is 1-2 with a 5.67 ERA in 27 innings in 2019, all out of the bullpen. He has allowed an opponent’s batting average of .327 and has a WHIP of 1.78.
Mike Montgomery will go into the starting rotation and pitch on Friday. The Royals will call up catcher Meibrys Viloria to take Maldonado’s catching spot. We might not know until Tuesday who is being sent down to make room for Viloria.

The offense scored five runs on ten hits. Hunter Dozier, Cheslor Cuthbert and Nicky Lopez each had two hits. Martin Maldonado was removed from the game after just one plate appearance in which he doubled. We later learned that he had been traded to the Chicago Cubs for Mike Montgomery.

Missouri’s appeal to be heard by NCAA this week
Dennis Dodd of CBS Sports reported on Monday that Missouri will appear before the NCAA Infractions Appeal Committee this week. The hearing is for Missouri to argue against the bowl ban the NCAA placed on Missouri for the upcoming season. The NCAA’s decision is expected in 4-8 weeks.
SEC Media Day
Missouri released its current depth chart at the SEC media day event in Birmingham, Alabama on Monday.
Missouri coach Barry Odom is thankful for the work the administration did on the appeal but said it doesn’t do the players or staff any good to worry about it at this point since it’s out of their control. Odom said that freshman cornerback Ish Burdine will likely miss the entire season because of a torn labrum. Tre Williams remains suspended from the team while his domestic assault charges are going through the legal system. Missouri is still waiting to hear from the NCAA on former TCU quarterback Shawn Robinson’s transfer waiver to be able to play immediately.
Big 12 Media Day
Commissioner Bob Bowlsby spoke at the Big 12 media day on Monday. He said that the conference will have a channel on ESPN+ called Big 12 Now. It will have over 800 athletic events each year. The Big 12 has had no expansion discussions and will have ten teams for the foreseeable future. He said that Kansas followed the conference’s policy and that the decision is made by university administration outside of the athletic department.
Kansas coach Les Miles opened his press conference by saying that violence against women will not be tolerated. He said that the suspension of Pooka Williams was not made by him but that he agreed with the decision. He said that the talent at Kansas is better than what he had when he took over at Oklahoma State. Miles thinks the offense will be able to run and pass the ball but that we will find out later. The quarterback decision has not been made but Thomas MacVittie is ahead of Carter Stanley at this time.
