On Thursday, Jeff Passan of ESPN reported that Major League Baseball has given permission to the Tampa Bay Rays to explore splitting their home games between Tampa Bay and Montreal. The Rays would play early season home games in Tampa Bay and the remainder in Montreal.
St. Petersburg mayor Rick Kriseman said that the Rays could not explore playing games in any other city prior to 2028 without approval from the city of St. Petersburg, which Kriseman said he has no intention of pursuing. Kriseman said, “I believe this is getting a bit silly.”
Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred said that the Rays are committed to Tampa Bay through 2027.
