The Chicago White Sox announced that they are extending their netting down the lines to the foul poles. The White Sox are the first major league team to extend netting to the foul poles. It’s common in Japan but teams are now being pushed to extend their netting to protect fans.
The White Sox are planning to extend the nets as soon as possible this season but no date has been announced. It was learned in late May that the Texas Rangers are going to put in nets in their new ballpark that opens in 2020. The nets will extend most of the way down the lines but they are not planning on them reaching the foul poles at this time. It would not be surprising for the Rangers to change their mind prior to opening the ballpark next season. Nobody is talking about it but imagine how much nets would help in Toronto when their fans decide to throw items on the field!
