The Royals started a three game series in Seattle on Monday. Danny Duffy struggled through five innings, allowing four runs on seven hits and three walks. However, Brian Flynn, Jake Diekman and Ian Kennedy combined for four scoreless innings to help the Royals to a 6-4 win. Jorge Soler hit his 19th home run on the season. Alex Gordon, Cheslor Cuthbert and Jorge Bonifacio each had two hits. The win dropped the Royals three games behind Baltimore for the worst record in baseball and the race for the top pick in the 2020 draft.
Jorge Soler continues to hit the ball hard. He’s a hard one to figure out. He’s in his age 27 season which has historically been one of the best seasons for position players. He’s hitting .245 with an .823 OPS. There’s a chance he takes another step in his development but I probably wouldn’t count on that. He is probably a good player for the Royals to trade if they can get a reasonable return for him. There’s nothing wrong with having a player like Soler on the team. However, he likely won’t be with the team when they are ready to compete in 2-3 years. So the Royals should probably look to trade him if they get a good offer this season or this winter.
