The Royals had the second overall pick behind Baltimore in the 2019 MLB Draft on Monday. After the Orioles took Oregon State catcher Adley Rutschman, the Royals selected high school shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. Witt was drafted one spot ahead of where his dad was drafted in 1985. Bobby Witt was drafted third overall by the Texas Rangers. Jim Callis of Baseball America said about Witt that “He’s gonna be to the Royals what Patrick Mahomes is to the Chiefs.” If you’re trying to get people in Kansas City excited about s baseball draft pick, that’s exactly how you do it. Mahomes seemed to be excited about it.
Baseball America’s JJ Cooper said that if Witt gets to the major leagues quickly he could arrive in 2022. Adalberto Mondesi will be in his fifth season at that time. Royals fans might not like hearing this but that timing could be perfect for Witt to take over at shortstop for the Royals when they trade Mondesi. Hopefully the Royals’ finances change with a new, lucrative television contract but it’s likely that the Royals won’t be able to re-sign Mondesi and will need to trade him at this time for prospects.
