Danny Duffy pitched five great innings and appeared to be cruising to a dominating victory against the Texas Rangers but then the sixth inning started. In the sixth the wheels fell off and the Rangers put up six runs. The sixth inning was the only inning in which the Rangers scored but it was way more than enough.
Whit Merrifield tripled in the third inning. Whit hit the ball well but it was misread by centerfielder Joey Gallo and ended up as a triple. Most centerfielders catch that ball.
Alex Gordon hit a two out triple to center in the fifth to score Adalberto Mondesi from second and give the Royals a 2-0 lead.
Cheslor Cuthbert was selected from AAA Omaha before Friday’s game and immediately hit a home run to right in his first at bat in the second inning on a sinker that stayed up to give the Royals a 1-0 lead.
Danny Duffy was terrific in the first five innings. In the sixth he ran into trouble. A walk followed by three singles cut the Royals’ lead to 2-1. Duffy then walked in the tying run. Joey Gallo then hit a grand slam and the Royals were down 6-2 and his night was over.
