The game ended in a 1-0 loss but it was an encouraging loss. Sporting has had so much trouble on defense lately that fans of the team are nervous from the opening kick. But on this night the defense held their own. The only goal scored by D.C. United came on a beautiful kick from the left side of the goal just outside the penalty box and curled into the upper right hand corner around keeper Tim Melia.
The offense was non-existent once again. Johnny Russell appeared frustrated that he was not able to do much against D.C. but he wasn’t the only one. Sporting had 11 shots but only four of them were on goal. The best opportunities the team had were all not on goal. Sporting also managed to get just three corner kicks in the game.
Sporting plays its next three games at home in Children’s Mercy Park starting on Saturday against Vancouver Whitecaps FC. It’s an important stretch for the team. Sporting is currently 11th out of 12 teams in the Western Conference but also just three points out of 7th place for the last playoff spot and Sporting has a game in hand.
Sporting is 2-1-2 at home and 0-3-2 on the road. This three game home stretch will be a challenge. Sporting needs a win over Vancouver, a team that is also not in the playoff picture in the west at this time. The following two games are against the LA Galaxy and Seattle Sounders, both of whom have 22 points on the season compared to Sporting’s 10. Sporting needs to come away with at least five points and ideally six or more.
After the three game home stretch Sporting goes on the road for four games. As mentioned earlier, Sporting has yet to win a road game this season.
