Alex Gordon and Billy Hamilton accounted for four of the six Royals hits on Sunday. The offense was only able to score one run against a Phillies pitcher making his major league debut.
The infield defense was bad in the eighth. There was miscommunication at second base and at first base on both throws of a potential double play. The Royals ended up getting just the out at second.
Jakob Junis pitched well until the fifth inning. In the fifth he allowed a weak infield hit, although it was ruled an error on Mondesi. Junis then walked two batters and allowed a single before Ned Yost removed him from today’s circle of trust.
Richard Lovelady relieved Junis in the fifth with the bases loaded and one out and the Royals trailing 2-1. Lovelady allowed two hits before getting a double play to get out of the inning. At the end of the fifth the Royals were down 6-1.
