Atlanta won the MLS Cup in 2018. They entered Children’s Mercy Park Sunday with a 2-3-2 record on the season in 10th place in the Eastern Conference and had scored just two road goals all season. They left Kansas City with a dominating 3-0 win over what is currently a terrible Sporting Kansas City team.
Is Sporting a bad team? No. At full strength Sporting is a very good team. However, Sporting is dealing with so many injuries right now and those not injured appear to be exhausted. Mental and physical mistakes are killing the team right now. Johnny Russell couldn’t settle a ball that he easily settled early in the season when the team was playing well.
Tim Melia is losing his mind after every goal allowed. He is over-the-top demonstrative as if to try to let us know that he is mad about the goal. We understand. You didn’t mean to allow the ball into the net. We also understand that the keeper is not the sole guilty party when a goal is scored. The entire team is to blame. But Tim seems to want us to know that he is angry about it. We get it. It gets old quick.
This is not a team worth watching right now. If you have anything else to do you would be wise to pass on watching the games until they once again appear to be an MLS caliber team. Right now they aren’t worth the time.
At some point the injured players will return and this will be an exciting team to watch again. If there was ever any doubt about Sporting not having two quality groups who could help them win in both the MLS and the CONCACAF Champions League we clearly see now that is not the case. They tried to sell us on that at the beginning of the season. That’s just not honest.
I’ll continue watching the team. If you can’t don’t worry about it. I will let you know how each game went. I would not recommend spending money to go watch this team play right now. At some point they will be worth every penny but not right now.
