Jorge Lopez appears to be a bright spot in the Royals’ pitching staff right now. Lopez has quality pitches but makes mistakes with location too much right now. He looks like he will develop into a quality starting pitcher. In this game, Lopez allowed three runs in the first inning but just one the rest of the game. He struggled a little in the third inning but the rest of the game looked pretty easy for him.
Hunter Dozier singled to right center on a ball near the top of the strike zone. He was called out looking at the third strike in a similar location in his first at bat. He’s making adjustments quickly right now.
Jorge Soler hit an inside fastball the opposite way for a single to right field in the second inning. That was a good to see. Soler was not stepping out and trying to pull that pitch to left. That hit was impressive. … Soler hit a long solo home run in the ninth off of Tigers’ closer Shane Greene to pull the Royals to within 4-3.
Kelvin Gutierrez hit a slider to left center in the fourth for a triple scoring Hunter Dozier from first. He made the outfielders make a play and they couldn’t get him at third.
Chris Owings started at shortstop in this game. In his first plate appearance he swung at three pitches and missed on all three for a strikeout. … Owings struck out swinging with one out in the fourth and Kelvin Gutierrez at third base.
Ryan O’Hearn pinch hit in the ninth. After starting 0-2 he ran the count full before hitting a double down the right field line.
Jorge Lopez allowed the first three batters to reach base, two of them on singles and one on a walk. Lopez was leaving pitches in the middle of the strike zone and Detroit wasn’t missing them. He allowed three runs in the first inning. … Lopez got better and better as the game advanced. He has a lot of ability. The concern is that he makes mistakes with location too often to be successful right now. I expect him to be much better in 2020.
Wily Peralta pitched the eighth inning for the Royals. Peralta loaded the bases but got out of the inning without allowing a run.
