A third inning three-run home run by Gleybor Torres was taken off the board after it was ruled to be fan interference. Review determined that the fan reached into the field of play and that Alex Gordon would have caught the ball.
Masahiro Tanaka was terrific Saturday against the Royals. Whit Merrifield and Chris Owings had cheap front row right field Yankee Stadium home runs but other than that the Royals didn’t do much of anything.
Whit joined the cheap right field Yankee Stadium home run club in the fifth by reaching the first row of the stands.
Mondesi laid off of a borderline 3-1 pitch up and away for the walk. He showed a lot of patience letting that ball go. He earned a walk with his patience.
Gordon laid down a a perfect bunt in the first. He was thrown out at first by half a step. Had he not looked back most of his trip down the line he would have beat it out. Gordon did what the youth players do and he was out because of it.
Dozier made a nice play attacking the ball on a chopper in the second. He played the ball into a short hop instead of taking a chance on an in-between hop. The throw was easy after that.
Dozier doubled down the left field line in the sixth after walking twice earlier in the game.
Owings joined Whit Merrifield with a cheap right field home run in the ninth.
Hamilton tripled down the right field line to lead off the third.
Fillmyer was hit early by the joke that is right field in Yankee Stadium. He allowed two routine fly balls to right field that were home runs in New York. After the first home run, hit by Aaron Judge, Fillmyer started nibbling around the strike zone briefly before correcting himself. He settled down but then was hit by the routine fly ball home runs to right again with all of them landing in the first row or two. He did allow hard hit balls but all of them would have been caught in any other stadium. Fillmyer is doing ok and shouldn’t be judged too much by this start.
Sparkman entered the game to start the fifth inning. While the results were not good this was the right time for Ned Yost to use Sparkman. Sparkman and Brad Boxberger should be used to eat innings in games where the outcome is already likely determined.
Newberry pitched one inning and allowed one hit to go with two strikeouts. It was a nice outing for Newberry.
